For me, learning Hindi is just one of the things that I think I should achieve. I’m not so consistent though, as it mostly depends on how I am feeling and if I’m not in good mood I just leave my books and notebooks aside. My experience with teachers haven’t been so good and many times (when I’m not doing the effort) the Hindi script just looks like vague pictures decorating the landscape.
I usually throw Hindi words in my conversation but I really don’t know how to write what I’m saying. Mostly I catch these words from other people’s conversation, TV or Indian music. I guess this is the natural way to learn a new language, by exposing yourself to it. I really have fun mixing up my English, Spanish and now my Hindi… so beware when speaking to me coz you can get some surprises!
Lately, I’ve started practicing my Hindi writing in Devanagari script and well, it takes me ages to write just one page and at double space! But I’m trying a bit every day and I hope to continue doing it as this will also help me to gain some speed when I want to read things in Hindi, like the newspaper or the street boards for example.
The picture above shows a peek on my writing… no, I’m not 5 years old… I’m just a beginner working on a story from the Panchatantra, which is a collection of stories, more precisely animal fables, that usually kids learn at school. I’m really enjoying it.
I know I have a long way to run but who knows, maybe I’ll even learn new words from you, my dear readers, and I’ll be happy to share my progress
.
