Anna Hazare’s Anti Corruption Crusade

Corruption in India has many faces: bribes, people sneaking money out of the country, fraudulent contracts, money laundering, etc. And we have seen a lot of that lately with the great scandal of the Commonwealth Games, Swiss accounts, and well who hasn’t face a corrupt official asking for a bribe. It’s the daily bread.

What surprises me is that India wasn’t having an anti corruption law. Really? There hasn’t been such a law since Indian Independence? Well, that explains many many things. The draft of the law has been around though, but I guess the same corrupt politicians never wanted to approve it.

A man named Anna Hazare, who previously fasted for the implementation of the Right to Information Act, decided to fast again for the acceptance of the draft for the Anti – Corruption law in the Jantar Mantar of Delhi. After almost 100 hours fasting, he finally got his voice heard and the Government of India has accepted his draft and we all hope it will be approved by the Indian Parliament soon.

But Anna Hazare wasn’t alone in this crusade, many Indian citizens from Delhi and around the country expressed their support by gathering and carrying Indian flags. It’s the first time I see that Indian citizens embrace the power of the Civil Society.

It was great to see his supporters and how he could achieve so much for this country in these few days. He says the fight has just started, and he is right. Many steps are yet to be completed for the approval of this law.

While in other countries is very common to use the powers of the Civil Rights and Civil Society, here in India most of the demands are related to some particular political party, and it’s a bit unusual to see people demanding something to the government as a society.

I think it’s great what Anna Hazare and Indian people are achieving. And I hope to see more of these Civil Society movements and campaigns for Civil Rights in India. As a democracy, India has achieved a very big step and as citizens we should contribute by not accepting corruption in our daily life at any level.

Indeed it is good to see the Civil Society taking action in things like corruption. It’s true what you say, people have somehow accepted corruption as part of their lives and we will only be able to see some changes if as society we refuse to continue encouraging this vicious circle.

:)

Until we hv Rock-Solid Laws in place..tis Ain’t feasible. There’ll always b ppl who ll b ready to get thru wit their activities by corrupt means..Legal or Illegal..cz it’d assure them convinient n speedy work :(
