I watched Outsourced last year and was always curious of what people in India will think of such a TV show. Will they find it offensive? Will they find it amusing? Read the rest of this entry »

Why This Kolaveri Di has the whooping 21,652,670 views in Youtube as of today. I have to say that I’m quite surprised about how popular this song has become in less than a month from it’s release in India.

I can’t believe that I started this blog 2 years ago. So many things have changed since then. I’ve learned many things about India, I have observed and understood other things too, I am slowly finding a place in this huge country.

There have been ups and downs and still after a long time living in India, there are things that drive me crazy but there are other things I like too. Read the rest of this entry »

What’s Your Perfect Date?

The Indian advertisements always make me laugh. The other day I watched this Airtel ad and found it very amusing.

Shows a guy with a very limited budget: Rs. 285 (5.82 USD) on what I assume is a date with 2 girls at a restaurant. Now, what can you possibly buy at a restaurant with that kind of budget and for 3 people. The girls wanted some “expensive” dishes like pasta napolitana and Thai green curry but the waiter tells them very seriously that such dishes are not available ha ha.

Poverty Line in India

Posted by Spanish Native in India | Posted in Coffee Chat | Posted on 26-09-2011

I was reading the newspaper and came across this news about the new poverty line drawn by The Planning Commission of India. I was shocked to know that they consider someone as poor if they spend up to Rs. 32 or 0.65 USD per day if living in urban areas. Really? I wonder what kind of analysis they made to reach to this conclusion. And also, what they are trying to tell us, that if for example someone spends Rs. 33 this means he is not poor?

I continued to read the article and it pointed out that for having a nutritious meal one can spend: Read the rest of this entry »

I Support Anna Hazare

Posted by Spanish Native in India | Posted in Coffee Chat | Posted on 22-08-2011

Last April, I came to know about a man who wanted to make a difference in India and I wrote about it: “Anna Hazare’s Anti Corruption Crusade“. Unfortunately, since last April, the anti – corruption law remained as a draft and the Government of India didn’t do much to make it real. But Anna Hazare was sure to remind everybody that something needed to be done and proposed another fast in protest. Read More…

Humour in Indian Politics

Talking about politics in India is a huge door that I don’t dare to knock. You can also say that in one way or another religion always get stuck in the middle and makes things more messy.

India is such a huge country and there’s always something going on. News Channels don’t make things more objective. On the contrary, they over exaggerate every story to the maximum. A show can start with a conversation about economics and suddenly change to something related to UFO’s and aliens. I just laugh about how the media loves to distort the reality. Read More…

Are You a Good Indian Girl?

Posted by Spanish Native in India | Posted in Coffee Chat | Posted on 25-04-2011

What makes a girl a good Indian girl? Hmm this really got the thinking… I mean, we are in 2011, Indian girls live in metros and abroad, their professional and personal interests are quite diverse and there’s really not much time left to think about it.

On the other hand, if you live in an Indian society, you can be questioned about your skills as a host. You don’t know how to make chai? an aunty can say… Ouch… well maybe I can be forgiven because there are no tea leaves at home? or perhaps because I just don’t like chai? oops… that’s almost a sin in India. Anna Hazare’s Anti Corruption Crusade

Posted by Spanish Native in India | Posted in Coffee Chat | Posted on 11-04-2011

Corruption in India has many faces: bribes, people sneaking money out of the country, fraudulent contracts, money laundering, etc. And we have seen a lot of that lately with the great scandal of the Commonwealth Games, Swiss accounts, and well who hasn’t face a corrupt official asking for a bribe. It’s the daily bread.

What surprises me is that India wasn’t having an anti corruption law. Really? There hasn’t been such a law since Indian Independence? Well, that explains many many things. The draft of the law has been around though, but I guess the same corrupt politicians never wanted to approve it.

A man named Anna Hazare, who previously fasted for the implementation of the Right to Information Act, decided to fast again for the acceptance of the draft for the Anti – Corruption law in the Jantar Mantar of Delhi. After almost 100 hours fasting, he finally got his voice heard and the Government of India has accepted his draft and we all hope it will be approved by the Indian Parliament soon. Read More…

A Hindi Song In My Head

I just saw this cute advertisement on TV. It has that nice children’s song that I like so much lakadi ki kaathi.

Lakadi Ki Kaathi Kaathi Pe Ghoda
Ghode Ki Dum Pe Jo Maara Hathauda
Dauda Dauda Dauda Ghoda Dum Utha Ke Dauda

I always like songs as they stick on my mind easily and I’m often singing them even without knowing their meaning. Read More…

Wanted an Indian Boyfriend or Husband

Posted by Spanish Native in India | Posted in Coffee Chat | Posted on 21-02-2011

No, It’s not that I’m searching for an Indian boyfriend but many women from Latin America are. Isn’t it great all the magic that the Indian cinema can create around the world? Maybe they have the illusion that India is like a big movie set. That you are on a bus station and suddenly a girl sees a boy and the boy sees the girl, and they start dancing, and everybody else also starts a synchronized dance.

Or maybe is the stability of the Indian married life that has been highlighted in the west or maybe they show in the Indian movies that a man fights for his love and the couple meet and the romance is in the air. The SRK (Shahrukh Khan) charisma is there with the songs and the dance, and even the reality is quite different, their ability to see India is only through the DVDs that they purchase from their local markets or from other few sources.
