I woke up and my Digital TV was showing a Marathi channel instead of Star Movies, the Lok Sabha instead of HBO, was I still sleeping? Nope, all the channels were just scrambled. I called the Costumer Service and selected “English” as my language. I waited…. and waited… finally I spoke with a guy:
- My name is blah blah, may I know who is on the line? He said
- My name is Nina I said (My twitter friends suggested me to just pick any Indian name to avoid further confusions lol)
I explained my problem and then he started asking me some questions. The thing is that I was not able to understand what the heck he was saying. He was speaking in English indeed, but this wasn’t an Indian/English accent at all. It wasn’t an American or British English accent either. For me, learning Hindi is just one of the things that I think I should achieve. I’m not so consistent though, as it mostly depends on how I am feeling and if I’m not in good mood I just leave my books and notebooks aside. My experience with teachers haven’t been so good and many times (when I’m not doing the effort) the Hindi script just looks like vague pictures decorating the landscape.
I usually throw Hindi words in my conversation but I really don’t know how to write what I’m saying. Mostly I catch these words from other people’s conversation, TV or Indian music. I guess this is the natural way to learn a new language, by exposing yourself to it. I really have fun mixing up my English, Spanish and now my Hindi… so beware when speaking to me coz you can get some surprises! Read More…
