Yesterday I was reading about the festival called Karwa Chauth. It’s an Indian festival in which married woman fast the whole day for their husband’s long life. Also unmarried girls fast for their wish of getting a good husband one day. This festival obviously brought many questions in my head. I asked: when is the day when husbands fast for the long life of their wives? The answer was that there was not such a festival.
This really made me think that this festival was originated way back, when the husband was the sole provider for the home and the wife use to stay at home. Read the rest of this entry »

Getting married in India is always a big deal. Moreover if the families are planning to arrange the marriage for their kids then it definitely becomes a serious matter. Sometimes, when I read the newspaper on Sundays I give a glimpse to the Matrimonial section and try to understand a bit about how society still works in India and every time I get more surprised by the advertisements.
And so I was thinking how these families that publish ads in the newspaper manage all the queries. Read the rest of this entry »

When people think about outsourcing, they often think about big corporations. Like US companies outsourcing their call centers to India for example. Now what would you say if I tell you that some maids in India are experts in outsourcing? Oh the maids, they are quite a thing. I’ve told you before about some few issues I have with them… The Threatening Maids. Read the rest of this entry »

Few months back I went to see the renovation of the India Gate. I always like to watch this monument whenever I pass with the car and sometimes I go there just to walk around.

The last few days I’ve been in bed and in pain. Why? because of my visit to the dentist. The problem started when my “wisdom tooth” decided to start growing and well, there was no space in my mouth for another tooth and it was causing me pain and swelling.
I had the same problem around 4 years back and the tooth was extracted smoothly back home. I didn’t feel anything during that operation and with the proper rest and cares of my dear mommy everything was alright. So I had that image in my mind that the operation wasn’t going to be that bad. Changing the TV Channels I stopped at Fashion TV. I just glued to it for 10 – 15 minutes and remembered my life moments when I was on the other side of the world. Everything was so different and it seems so unreal while you are living on this side of the world. Watching the designs of the Italian designers with tall and thin models. The French and Spanish beaches on the Fashion TV with semi clad women (of course the Indian TV channel doesn’t show the real Fashion TV here in India, they show only what is covered) reminded me the good old times. The meaning of fashion is restricted to clothes only rather than the style of living or dressing.

The day when it all started…
I
It’s the first time I’m putting my feet on Indian soil. It’s a September night and my plane just landed in New Delhi. From the plane window I could see the lights of Delhi City, I am excited! I farewell my chatty plane friends going to other parts of India.
II
I am clearly not ready for the change of weather, I am wearing a jacket that soon I take off. I am sweating so much… my nose is bleeding. Where’s my perfume? In the checked bag. Where’s the checked bag? Sigh.Read More…

The transport in Delhi has one thing I like, the Delhi Metro. Sometimes it’s just nice to avoid the traffic jams, auto rickshaws, cycle rikshaws, cows, etc., etc., etc.
Metro people are interesting too. The intellectual guy reading a book, the techie guy talking with his handsfree phone. Some girl tweeting or surfing the net (that would be me). Group of girls texting and laughing. The business man talking about some bank deposits, the woman doing her make up, the kids making noise, the teens sitting on the floor… So you can imagine how peculiar is the ride. Read More…

When I think about renewing my passport I think about going in the morning to the Immigration office with my receipt and old passport and after a quick process, getting it after a couple of hours.
Here in India the story is completely different. When an Indian citizen wants to renew or apply for his passport there’s a huge process that can easily take few months. Indian population doesn’t make things easier but at least you have the choice of applying by post, quite convenient if you are not in a hurry. Read More…

I woke up and my Digital TV was showing a Marathi channel instead of Star Movies, the Lok Sabha instead of HBO, was I still sleeping? Nope, all the channels were just scrambled. I called the Costumer Service and selected “English” as my language. I waited…. and waited… finally I spoke with a guy:
- My name is blah blah, may I know who is on the line? He said
- My name is Nina I said (My twitter friends suggested me to just pick any Indian name to avoid further confusions lol)
I explained my problem and then he started asking me some questions. The thing is that I was not able to understand what the heck he was saying. He was speaking in English indeed, but this wasn’t an Indian/English accent at all. It wasn’t an American or British English accent either. It was a kind of strange vocalization, I think he was trying to copy a British accent but he was doing it very bad. All I could hear was a continuous kind of “roar” like if he had a huge chewing gum in his mouth lol. Read More…
